Allegra (fexofenadine hydrochloride) is a leading non-drowsy antihistamine medication designed to provide fast and long-lasting relief from seasonal allergy symptoms. As a second-generation H1-receptor antagonist, it targets the underlying histamine response without crossing the blood-brain barrier, minimizing central nervous system effects. Trusted by healthcare professionals worldwide, Allegra offers a clinically proven solution for managing allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria with a favorable safety profile.

Features

  • Contains fexofenadine hydrochloride as the active pharmaceutical ingredient
  • Available in multiple formulations: tablets (30 mg, 60 mg, 180 mg), orally disintegrating tablets, and oral suspension
  • Rapid onset of action, typically within one hour of administration
  • 24-hour sustained relief with single-daily dosing for most formulations
  • Sugar-free and alcohol-free formulations available
  • Manufactured under strict pharmaceutical quality control standards

Benefits

  • Provides effective relief from sneezing, runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes
  • Non-drowsy formula allows for normal daily activities without sedation
  • Long-lasting protection enables all-day symptom management
  • Minimal cardiotoxicity risk compared to first-generation antihistamines
  • Suitable for seasonal and perennial allergy sufferers aged 6 years and older
  • Multiple dosage forms accommodate different patient preferences and needs

Common use

Allegra is primarily indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults and children 6 years of age and older. These symptoms include sneezing, rhinorrhea, itchy nose/palate/throat, itchy/watery/red eyes, and nasal congestion. Additionally, it is approved for the treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives) in patients 6 months of age and older, reducing pruritus and decreasing the number of wheals.

Dosage and direction

For seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 12 years and older: 60 mg twice daily or 180 mg once daily. For children 6-11 years: 30 mg twice daily. For children 6 months to 5 years: 15 mg twice daily (using oral suspension). Administer with water on an empty stomach, as absorption may be reduced with food. For optimal efficacy, take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Do not take with fruit juices (apple, orange, or grapefruit) as they may decrease absorption.

Precautions

Patients with renal impairment require dosage adjustment; those with creatinine clearance less than 80 mL/min should use lower doses. Elderly patients may be more susceptible to adverse reactions. Use caution in patients with pre-existing cardiac conditions, although fexofenadine has shown minimal QT prolongation effects. Pregnant women should use only if clearly needed, as adequate human studies are lacking. Nursing mothers should consult healthcare providers before use, as fexofenadine is excreted in breast milk.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine hydrochloride or any component of the formulation. Concomitant use with aluminum and magnesium-containing antacids within 2 hours of Allegra administration. Patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 30 mL/min) without appropriate dosage adjustment. Use in children under 6 months of age has not been established.

Possible side effect

Most common adverse reactions (≥2%) include headache, drowsiness, nausea, dizziness, and dyspepsia. Less frequently reported effects include back pain, sinusitis, cough, upper respiratory infection, vomiting, dysmenorrhea, and fatigue. Hypersensitivity reactions including rash, urticaria, pruritus, and angioedema have been reported rarely. Most side effects are mild to moderate and transient in nature.

Drug interaction

Allegra may interact with erythromycin and ketoconazole, which can increase fexofenadine plasma concentrations. Antacids containing aluminum and magnesium reduce fexofenadine absorption and should be administered at least 2 hours apart. Fruit juices (particularly apple, orange, and grapefruit) may decrease bioavailability and should be avoided concomitantly. No clinically significant interactions have been observed with warfarin, digoxin, or ethanol.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed administration. Maintain consistent timing for optimal therapeutic effect.

Overdose

In case of suspected overdose, symptoms may include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. There is no specific antidote for fexofenadine overdose. Treatment should be supportive and symptomatic. Gastric lavage may be considered if performed soon after ingestion. Hemodialysis does not effectively remove fexofenadine from the bloodstream. Contact poison control center (1-800-222-1222) or emergency medical services immediately.

Storage

Store at room temperature (20-25°C or 68-77°F), with excursions permitted between 15-30°C (59-86°F). Keep in original container, tightly closed, and protect from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after expiration date printed on packaging. Properly discard any unused medication after treatment completion.

Patients report high satisfaction with the non-drowsy formulation, allowing maintenance of normal daily activities. Healthcare professionals appreciate its favorable safety profile and minimal drug interaction potential. Long-term users note consistent effectiveness across multiple allergy seasons with proper dosing compliance.
