Astelin Nasal Spray: Effective Relief for Allergic Rhinitis Symptoms

Astelin Nasal Spray is a prescription medication containing the active ingredient azelastine hydrochloride, an antihistamine that works directly in the nasal passages to provide rapid and effective relief from symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. By targeting histamine receptors locally, it helps reduce sneezing, itching, runny nose, and nasal congestion without the systemic drowsiness often associated with oral antihistamines. Its mechanism offers both prophylactic and therapeutic benefits, making it a versatile option for allergy management under medical supervision.

Features

  • Contains azelastine hydrochloride 137 mcg per spray
  • Available in a metered-dose pump delivering consistent medication
  • Works as an H1-receptor antagonist with anti-inflammatory properties
  • Onset of action typically within 15–30 minutes
  • Suitable for adults and children ages 6 years and older
  • Preservative-free formulation in some markets

Benefits

  • Provides fast, localized relief from nasal allergy symptoms
  • Reduces reliance on oral medications that may cause drowsiness
  • Helps improve quality of life during allergy seasons
  • Can be used preventatively before allergen exposure
  • Minimizes systemic side effects due to topical administration
  • Effective for both seasonal and year-round allergic rhinitis

Common use

Astelin Nasal Spray is commonly prescribed for the management of symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis, including sneezing, rhinorrhea (runny nose), nasal pruritus (itching), and nasal congestion. It is appropriate for seasonal allergies triggered by pollen, as well as perennial allergies caused by indoor allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, or mold. Some healthcare providers may also recommend it off-label for non-allergic rhinitis or as adjunct therapy in certain cases of sinusitis.

Dosage and direction

For adults and adolescents 12 years and older: 2 sprays per nostril twice daily.
For children 6 to 11 years: 1 spray per nostril twice daily.
Prime the pump before first use or if not used for 3 or more days by releasing 4 sprays into the air until a fine mist appears. Shake gently before each use. Blow nose gently prior to administration. Tilt head slightly forward, insert tip into nostril, and spray away from the nasal septum. Breathe in gently through the nose. Avoid blowing nose for a few minutes after use.

Precautions

  • Do not use if allergic to azelastine or any ingredient in the formulation.
  • Avoid contact with eyes; rinse thoroughly with water if accidental exposure occurs.
  • Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
  • May cause drowsiness in some individuals; assess response before driving or operating machinery.
  • Not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly needed and under medical supervision.
  • Discard bottle after 200 sprays, as dosage may not be accurate beyond this point.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to azelastine hydrochloride or any component of the formulation. There are no other absolute contraindications, though caution is advised in patients with severe renal impairment or those taking CNS depressants.

Possible side effects

Common side effects (≥2% of users) include: bitter taste, headache, nasal discomfort, epistaxis (nosebleeds), and somnolence. Less frequently reported: dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, rhinitis, pharyngitis, sneezing. Rare but serious side effects may include hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, urticaria, or bronchospasm. Discontinue use and seek medical attention if severe reactions occur.

Drug interaction

No clinically significant pharmacokinetic interactions have been reported. However, due to potential additive sedative effects, caution is advised when used concomitantly with alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers, or other CNS depressants. Theoretical interactions with enzyme inhibitors are unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, administer as soon as remembered. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

Topical overdose is unlikely due to low systemic absorption. If excessive nasal administration occurs, rinse nasal passages with saline. Oral ingestion may lead to drowsiness; symptomatic and supportive care is recommended. There is no specific antidote.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature (20–25°C or 68–77°F). Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed and protected from light. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Discard 200 sprays after initial priming or 3 months after opening, whichever comes first.

Reviews

Clinical studies and patient reports indicate high satisfaction with Astelin Nasal Spray for its rapid symptom relief and reduced systemic side effects compared to oral antihistamines. Some users note the bitter taste as a drawback, though many find the benefits outweigh this minor inconvenience. Adherence is generally good due to twice-daily dosing and noticeable improvement in nasal allergy symptoms.
