Bactroban Ointment 5g contains mupirocin, a potent antibiotic specifically formulated for topical application to treat bacterial skin infections such as impetigo, folliculitis, and infected wounds. Its unique mechanism of action inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, effectively targeting susceptible strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. This prescription medication is designed for localized treatment, minimizing systemic absorption and focusing therapeutic action directly at the infection site. Healthcare professionals recommend it for its efficacy in eradicating pathogenic bacteria and promoting rapid healing of affected skin areas.

Features

  • Contains 2% mupirocin calcium equivalent to 2.15% mupirocin
  • Available in a 5g tube for convenient, measured application
  • White, translucent, water-soluble ointment base
  • Bactericidal action against gram-positive bacteria
  • Minimal systemic absorption with topical use
  • Preservative-free formulation

Benefits

  • Effectively eliminates causative bacteria at the infection site
  • Reduces symptoms like redness, swelling, and pus formation rapidly
  • Helps prevent the spread of infection to surrounding skin or other individuals
  • Supports faster healing and restoration of skin integrity
  • Minimizes risk of systemic side effects due to localized action
  • Convenient dosing and application for outpatient treatment

Common use

Bactroban Ointment is primarily indicated for the treatment of impetigo, a contagious bacterial skin infection characterized by honey-colored crusts, caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. It is also used for secondary infected traumatic skin lesions, folliculitis, and other localized cutaneous bacterial infections. Healthcare providers may prescribe it for decolonization of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in nasal carriers, though the nasal formulation is typically preferred for that indication. It is not effective against fungal or viral infections.

Dosage and direction

Apply a small amount of ointment to the affected area three times daily (approximately every 8 hours). The area may be covered with a sterile gauze dressing if desired. Wash hands before and after application unless hands are the treated area. Treatment typically continues for 5 to 10 days; do not exceed 10 days without medical supervision. For impetigo, gently remove crusted areas before application to enhance penetration. If no improvement is seen within 3-5 days, re-evaluation by a healthcare provider is recommended.

Precautions

Use only as directed by a healthcare professional. Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, or other mucous membranes. Do not use on large open wounds or severe burns without medical supervision. Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. Discontinue use and consult a physician if irritation, allergic reactions, or diarrhea occurs. Not for ophthalmic, intranasal, or intravaginal use. Use with caution in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, though systemic absorption is minimal.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to mupirocin or any component of the formulation. Should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to polyethylene glycol, as the ointment base contains polyethylene glycols which can cause irritation and kidney damage if absorbed systemically in large quantities. Not recommended for use on extensive burns or deep puncture wounds due to potential increased systemic absorption.

Possible side effect

Most common: application site reactions including burning, stinging, pain, or itching (occur in approximately 3% of patients). Less common: dryness, erythema, nausea, and contact dermatitis. Rare: systemic reactions including headache, diarrhea, and taste alteration. Very rare: anaphylaxis, angioedema, and generalized rash. Superinfection with non-susceptible organisms may occur with prolonged use.

Drug interaction

No clinically significant drug interactions have been reported due to minimal systemic absorption. However, concurrent use with other topical products may alter absorption characteristics or cause physical incompatibility. Avoid concomitant use with other topical antibiotics unless directed by a physician, as this may increase the risk of resistance development or adverse reactions.

Missed dose

Apply the missed dose as soon as remembered, unless it is almost time for the next scheduled application. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed application. Maintain the regular application schedule. If multiple doses are missed, contact a healthcare provider for guidance.

Overdose

Acute overdose is unlikely due to limited systemic absorption. However, excessive topical application could potentially lead to increased systemic absorption, particularly if applied to large body surface areas or compromised skin. Symptoms might include nausea, diarrhea, and local skin reactions. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical attention immediately. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 15-30°C (59-86°F). Do not freeze. Keep tube tightly closed when not in use. Protect from excessive heat and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging.

Reviews

Clinical studies demonstrate Bactroban Ointment achieves clinical cure rates of 85-95% in impetigo patients. Dermatologists frequently report excellent efficacy with minimal adverse effects when used appropriately. Patients note rapid improvement in symptoms within 2-3 days of initiation. Some reviews mention occasional mild burning upon application, which typically resolves with continued use. Healthcare providers emphasize the importance of completing the full course to prevent recurrence and resistance development.
