Manforce is a prescription medication containing Sildenafil Citrate, a potent phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, specifically formulated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in adult males. Its mechanism of action facilitates increased blood flow to the penile tissue upon sexual stimulation, enabling the achievement and maintenance of an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity. This treatment is intended for use under proper medical supervision and is not indicated for recreational purposes or use by women or children. Adherence to prescribed dosage and healthcare guidance is paramount for both safety and efficacy.
Features
- Active ingredient: Sildenafil Citrate
- Available in multiple dosage strengths (e.g., 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg)
- Rapid onset of action, typically within 30-60 minutes
- Duration of efficacy up to 4-5 hours
- Film-coated tablet for ease of administration
- Requires sexual stimulation for effect
- Prescription-only medication
Benefits
- Effectively facilitates the achievement of a firm erection when sexually aroused.
- Helps restore confidence and reduce anxiety associated with sexual performance.
- Improves overall sexual satisfaction for the individual and their partner.
- Provides a predictable and reliable treatment window for planned sexual activity.
- Supported by extensive clinical research and a well-understood safety profile.
- Non-hormonal mode of action focused on local vascular response.
Common use
Manforce is prescribed for the management of erectile dysfunction, a condition characterized by the consistent inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. It is used on an as-needed basis prior to anticipated sexual activity. It is not an aphrodisiac and does not increase libido; its efficacy is contingent upon the presence of sexual stimulation.
Dosage and direction
The recommended starting dose is typically 50 mg taken approximately one hour before sexual activity. Based on efficacy and tolerability, the dose may be increased to a maximum of 100 mg or decreased to 25 mg. The dosing frequency should not exceed once per 24-hour period. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water; it can be taken with or without food, though a high-fat meal may delay the onset of action.
Precautions
- A comprehensive medical history and physical examination should be conducted to diagnose ED and identify underlying causes before prescribing.
- Use with caution in patients with anatomical deformation of the penis (e.g., angulation, cavernosal fibrosis, Peyronie’s disease) or conditions predisposing to priapism (e.g., sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, leukemia).
- Cardiovascular status should be assessed, as sexual activity carries potential cardiac risk. Manforce is not recommended for use in men for whom sexual activity is inadvisable.
- Patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment require dose adjustment; a 25 mg dose is recommended.
- May cause dizziness or visual changes; caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.
Contraindications
- Concomitant use of any form of organic nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide mononitrate or dinitrate) or nitric oxide donors in any form.
- Known hypersensitivity to Sildenafil Citrate or any other component of the tablet.
- Concurrent use with guanylate cyclase stimulators, such as riociguat.
- Men for whom sexual activity is not recommended due to underlying cardiovascular status.
Possible side effects
The most common side effects are generally mild to moderate and transient. They may include:
- Headache
- Flushing
- Dyspepsia (indigestion)
- Nasal congestion
- Dizziness
- Visual disturbances (e.g., altered color vision, blurred vision)
- Less commonly, myalgia (muscle pain) and back pain
- Priapism (a prolonged and painful erection lasting more than 4 hours) is a rare but serious side effect requiring immediate medical attention to prevent permanent tissue damage.
Drug interaction
Sildenafil can potentiate the hypotensive effects of other medications. Significant interactions include:
- Nitrates: Concomitant use is absolutely contraindicated due to the risk of severe, life-threatening hypotension.
- Alpha-blockers: Concomitant use can lead to symptomatic hypotension; careful hemodynamic monitoring is required. A starting Manforce dose of 25 mg should be considered.
- Antihypertensives: Additive blood pressure-lowering effects may occur.
- CYP3A4 Inhibitors: Potent inhibitors like ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, and erythromycin can significantly increase sildenafil plasma concentrations, necessitating a dose reduction (e.g., 25 mg).
- Grapefruit juice: May inhibit CYP3A4 metabolism, increasing sildenafil exposure.
Missed dose
Manforce is not intended for chronic daily dosing. It is taken on an as-needed basis. Therefore, the concept of a “missed dose” does not apply. Do not take an extra tablet to make up for a missed pre-sexual activity dose.
Overdose
In cases of suspected overdose, standard supportive measures should be employed. Given that the primary pharmacology of Sildenafil is vasodilation, the most likely manifestations of overdose would be an extension of its known side effects, including severe hypotension, syncope, and prolonged erection. Management of severe hypotension should include placing the patient in the Trendelenburg position and administering IV fluids. Priapism requires immediate urological intervention. Dialysis is not expected to accelerate clearance as Sildenafil is highly protein-bound.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15-30°C or 59-86°F) in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep the container tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging.
