Nurofen is a well-established over-the-counter medication containing ibuprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties. It is specifically formulated to provide effective relief from a variety of mild to moderate pain conditions, including headaches, dental pain, muscular aches, and menstrual discomfort, while also reducing fever. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, thereby reducing the production of prostaglandins, which are mediators of pain, inflammation, and fever. Trusted by healthcare professionals and patients globally, Nurofen offers a reliable and fast-acting solution for acute symptomatic management.

Common use
Nurofen is commonly used for the temporary relief of mild to moderate pain such as headache, migraine, toothache, backache, period pain, and rheumatic or muscular pain. It is also indicated for the reduction of fever (antipyresis) and relief of symptoms associated with the common cold and influenza. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it suitable for conditions like sprains, strains, and soft tissue injuries where inflammation is a contributing factor.
Dosage and direction
For adults and children over 12 years: Take 1 tablet (200mg) every 4-6 hours as required. Do not exceed 3 tablets (600mg) in any 4-6 hour period, or 6 tablets (1200mg) in 24 hours. For children 7-12 years (approx. 20-40kg): 1 tablet (200mg) up to three times daily. Always use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration necessary. Should be taken with food or milk to minimize gastric upset. Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew.
Precautions
Do not use for more than 3 days for fever or 5 days for pain without consulting a doctor. Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disorders, asthma, dehydration, renal or hepatic impairment, hypertension, or cardiac failure. Avoid concomitant use with other NSAIDs. Not recommended during the first 6 months of pregnancy; avoid during third trimester. Elderly patients may be more susceptible to adverse effects.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ibuprofen, aspirin, or other NSAIDs. Patients with active or history of recurrent peptic ulcer/haemorrhage, severe heart failure, severe hepatic or renal disease. Third trimester of pregnancy. History of asthma induced by NSAIDs.
Possible side effect
Common: Nausea, dyspepsia, diarrhoea, abdominal pain. Less common: Dizziness, headache, rash. Rare but serious: Gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation, severe skin reactions, anaphylaxis, exacerbation of asthma, renal or hepatic impairment, cardiovascular events.
Drug interaction
May interact with anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), antiplatelets, ACE inhibitors, diuretics, corticosteroids, methotrexate, SSRIs, and other NSAIDs, increasing risk of bleeding, nephrotoxicity, or hypertension. Consult a healthcare professional before use if taking other medications.
Missed dose
Nurofen is taken on an as-needed basis for symptomatic relief and does not require a fixed dosing schedule. If a dose is missed and symptoms persist, take as soon as remembered, then continue with the recommended interval. Do not double the dose.
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, drowsiness, blurred vision, headache, tinnitus, metabolic acidosis, and rarely, acute renal failure or cardiovascular collapse. In case of suspected overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Do not induce vomiting; provide supportive care.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach and sight of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.
