Prevacid: Effective Prescription Relief for Acid Reflux
Prevacid (lansoprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) prescribed to reduce stomach acid production. It is commonly used to treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. By targeting the acid pumps in the stomach lining, it provides long-lasting relief and promotes healing of damaged esophageal tissue. Available in delayed-release capsules and orally disintegrating tablets, it offers flexible dosing options under medical supervision.
Features
- Active ingredient: lansoprazole
- Available in 15 mg and 30 mg delayed-release capsules
- Also offered as orally disintegrating tablets for ease of administration
- Delayed-release formulation ensures medication is activated in the intestine
- Prescription-only medication requiring healthcare provider authorization
- Suitable for adults and children ages 1 year and older (under medical guidance)
Benefits
- Provides sustained reduction in gastric acid secretion
- Promotes healing of erosive esophagitis
- Alleviates frequent heartburn and GERD symptoms
- Helps prevent stomach ulcers caused by NSAIDs when used appropriately
- May reduce the risk of ulcer recurrence in certain high-risk patients
- Contributes to improved quality of life by managing chronic acid-related conditions
Common use
Prevacid is primarily indicated for the short-term treatment (typically 4 to 8 weeks) of active duodenal ulcers, active benign gastric ulcers, and erosive esophagitis. It is also used for maintenance healing of erosive esophagitis and for the treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Additionally, it is prescribed for Helicobacter pylori eradication in combination with antibiotics. Many patients use it for symptomatic relief of frequent, persistent heartburn.
Dosage and direction
The typical adult dosage for healing erosive esophagitis is 30 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks. For maintenance therapy, 15 mg once daily is often recommended. For treating active duodenal ulcers, the standard dose is 15 mg once daily for 4 weeks. H. pylori eradication typically involves 30 mg of lansoprazole twice daily alongside antibiotics for 10 to 14 days. Prevacid should be taken before a meal, preferably in the morning. Capsules must be swallowed whole; they should not be crushed or chewed. Orally disintegrating tablets should be placed on the tongue and allowed to dissolve.
Precautions
Patients should inform their healthcare provider of any liver disease or history of low magnesium levels. Long-term use may increase the risk of bone fractures, particularly in older adults. Vitamin B12 deficiency has been reported with prolonged therapy. There is a potential risk of acute interstitial nephritis; patients should report any changes in urinary output or symptoms of kidney impairment. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed, and caution is advised when breastfeeding.
Contraindications
Prevacid is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to lansoprazole or any component of the formulation. It should not be used in individuals taking rilpivirine-containing products due to the risk of reduced antiviral efficacy. Concomitant use with drugs like atazanavir and nelfinavir is not recommended, as lansoprazole can significantly decrease their plasma concentrations.
Possible side effect
Common side effects may include headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea. Less frequently, patients may experience dizziness, constipation, or rash. Serious side effects, though rare, can include severe diarrhea (possibly Clostridium difficile-associated), kidney problems, lupus erythematosus, or low magnesium levels leading to muscle spasms, irregular heartbeat, or seizures. Patients should seek medical attention if they experience persistent watery diarrhea, abdominal cramping, or fever.
Drug interaction
Lansoprazole may interact with drugs such as warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding. It can reduce the absorption of ketoconazole, iron salts, and digoxin. Concurrent use with methotrexate may elevate methotrexate levels. It may also affect the efficacy of clopidogrel by reducing its antiplatelet activity. Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.
Missed dose
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one. Resume the regular dosing schedule with the next dose. Consistency is important for optimal acid suppression.
Overdose
There is limited experience with lansoprazole overdose. Possible manifestations may reflect an exaggeration of its pharmacodynamic effects, such as reduced gastric acid secretion. Symptoms could include confusion, drowsiness, blurred vision, tachycardia, nausea, sweating, and headache. In case of suspected overdose, seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center.
Storage
Store at room temperature (20–25°C or 68–77°F), away from moisture, light, and heat. Keep the medication in its original container, tightly closed, and out of reach of children and pets. Do not use beyond the expiration date printed on the packaging.

Reviews
Clinical studies and patient reports generally indicate that Prevacid is effective in managing acid-related disorders, with many users experiencing significant symptom relief. Some note the convenience of the orally disintegrating tablet formulation. A minority of users report side effects such as headache or gastrointestinal discomfort. Long-term users are advised to periodically reassess therapy with their healthcare provider.
